There has been a fishing club in Godmanchester for approaching 100 years. At one time there were regular matches on Saturdays and Sundays, plus Wednesday evenings during the summer months. Interest in fishing as a regular hobby has, it having been one of the pastimes permitted during Covid, received increased support in recent years.
The Godmanchester Angling Society has rights over about 15 miles of riverbank, although much of it is not easily accessible and a long walk. The best-known water is Godmanchester Recreation Ground (A), a picturesque gem which provides fishing in almost all weather and river conditions. The Club owns a stretch of riverbank on Lees Brook, off Berry Lane (B), thanks to the generosity of the Looker family. The other better-known waters are Cooks Stream (C), either side of The Avenue, and the main River Great Ouse on Westside Common (C), Fishers Dyke and Rymers Weir Backwater (D) on Eastside Common are both a very long walk, accessed through the Woolpack Fishery and Cow Lane.

For any inhabitant of Godmanchester who is over 12 but under 17 or over 65 wishing to fish on the Recreation Ground in Godmanchester it is free, but you still need to hold a membership card which will be issued free on application. To apply please click here
All adults 17-65 wishing to fish on the Recreation Ground, a day ticket is available at £5.
Season membership, which also includes our other waters is £20 per season.
Junior, if you are not a resident of Godmanchester between the age of 12-17 a day ticket is £5 and a Season membership is also £5. (Recreation Ground only)
If you are Over 65 and non-resident you can fish on a £5 day ticket or a season membership is available for £10

The Coarse fishing season for rivers is 16 June to 14 March only.
These rules are aimed at protecting fish stocks and making fisheries sustainable. Enclosed ‘stillwaters’, such as reservoirs, lakes and ponds, are able to be fished all year. Everyone over 13 should have a rod licence, and these can be purchased from the Environment Agency. Junior licences for 13–16-year-olds are free, but still required. Please check the Environment Agency for rod licence fees and rules.
There are rules for fishing that must be adhered to:
- Members must obey the byelaws of the Environment Agency
- No livebaiting permitted on any Club waters
- No fish to be removed at any time
- All pegs must be kept free of litter, including discarded lines/hooks etc.
- No camping or fires.
